At Home Activities for Youth

As part of the MABR Youth Program, we are offering printable activities for youth to do at home. Youth who complete 5 of the following activities will receive an MABR Sustainability Certificate from our UNESCO designated biosphere region! Contact Jessica.Pyett@viu.ca to obtain certificates.

Earth Day Challenge

  • This activity includes five different challenges for youth to do at home in support of Earth Day. Click on the title for the activity sheet!

Watershed Pollution Observations

  • This activity allows youth to create a “clean” watershed and a “polluted” watershed. They can make comparisons by drawing their observations, while thinking about the big picture of pollution!

Sustainability Word Search

  • Find all 15 words related to sustainability to complete the word search! Click here for the answer key.

Build a Sustainable City

  • Using the city template provided, youth can get creative and design their own sustainable city.

Grow your own Douglas fir seedling

  • This activity teaches youth how to grow Douglas fir seedlings with the help of a guide. MosaicForests has partnered with the MABR for this activity and has generously provided enough seedlings to ensure each participating household can receive multiple seedlings at no charge!

  • *Please note that we no longer have seedlings to deliver, as all 1,000 Douglas firs have been distributed.

Plant Scavenger Hunt

  • This activity gets youth outdoors in search of local plant species! The scavenger hunt package includes a description of each plant to help youth identify them, along with a fun fact to help youth remember the plant they have found.

Terrestrial Food Webs

  • This activity explains how food webs and food chains work. At the end, youth can complete the food webs by drawing the arrows between organisms, showing the flow of energy in an ecosystem. This includes both a moderate and a complex activity for varying learning levels.

  • To access the answer keys for these activities, please contact Mandy Hobkirk, MABR Coordinator through our Facebook page or by email (Mandy.hobkirk@viu.ca).

Growing Plants from Seed

  • This activity walks youth through the process of growing a plant from seed! The guide includes step-by-step instructions as well as helpful tips along the way.

Calculate your ecological footprint

  • This activity allows youth to calculate their ecological footprint based on their day-to-day activities. Once they have completed this, they can reflect on their results and brainstorm ways to live more sustainably!

Marine Scavenger Hunt

  • This activity gets youth outdoors in search of local marine species! The scavenger hunt package includes a picture and description of each organism to help youth identify them, along with a fun fact to help youth remember the critter they have found.

Marine Food Webs and Resiliency

  • This activity introduces youth to the topic of resiliency in food chains and webs, and how it relates to biodiversity.
